LEADERSHIP TEAM GRADUATES
Continuing to Excel
Hello Mrs. Moton! So I just had a video call with the Mayor of Houston, and he wants me to work with him on his community outreach initiative. It resembles the wholistic approach that Excel took with a more specific focus on low income neighborhoods that have been overlooked. Nothing is official yet but I wanted to thank you for all the opportunities to grow you’ve given me. I don’t know if I would’ve been prepared for this opportunity without them!️ miss you all

“I cannot believe I am typing this but....I JUST GOT A CALL FROM THE DEAN OF ADMISSION TELLING ME I WAS ACCEPTED INTO YALE LAW SCHOOL
THE NUMBER ONE SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY
I’m really gonna be the first lawyer in my family——at an Ivy
”
“As a member of the Choosing to Excel’s Leadership Team serving on the Legislative Committee, I learned several skills that not only helped me throughout undergrad but also contributed to my confidence in believing I can one day become a lawyer. I participated in Choosing to Excel’s “Day on the Hill” Washington, DC trip for four years in a row beginning in the ninth grade. Preparing for our meetings on the Hill with our legislatures was my first introduction to conducting research and more broadly taught me the importance of being able to support any political position I may have. Moreover, presenting in front of our congressmen improved my public speaking skills and undoubtedly contributed to my later success competing on Howard University’s Mock Trial team and in interviews that I have done.
Before being a part of the Leadership Team, I did not know that it was possible to intern at the U. S capitol. Through the Excel training and preparation and the interactions I had with staffers on the Hill during our DC trips, I was encouraged to apply even before I moved to DC to begin my first semester at Howard University. Because of this, I was able to secure a highly competitive Senate internship during the first semester of my freshman year at only 17 years old.
Who would have ever known starting in the Excel programs as a summer camper, being a part of GEMS, EYE Club and ultimately the Leadership Team would help prepare me for this leg in my journey?
For this and many more reasons, I am beyond grateful for my Choosing to Excel family! We were ALWAYS challenged to “Keep the End In Mind”
